Shining a Light on Modern Slavery: Celebrating Anti-Slavery Day 2024 with a Powerful Media Award with The Voice of Domestic Workers

October 18, is Anti-Slavery Day, and we are proud to celebrate the 2024 Anti-Slavery Day Award for Best Broadcast Piece Dealing with Modern Slavery. This recognition highlights the critical role of media in raising awareness and driving action against modern slavery, honoring impactful storytelling that brings to light the voices of those affected and advocates for their freedom. Together, we continue the fight to end exploitation and protect human dignity.

The Anti-Slavery Day Awards 2024, hosted by the Human Trafficking Foundation, was an unforgettable night dedicated to the global fight against modern slavery and human trafficking. The prestigious event brought together an inspiring coalition of advocates, organizations, and individuals who share a unified commitment to eradicating exploitation in all its forms. The atmosphere was charged with determination, creating a powerful space for reflection, inspiration, and celebration of the strides made in this vital cause.

Among the honorees was The Voice of Domestic Workers, an organization that advocates for the rights of migrant domestic workers, providing a platform for them to share their stories and fight for justice. The organization was nominated in three esteemed categories—a true reflection of the relentless efforts and dedication of their team.

One of the standout moments for The Voice of Domestic Workers was the nomination of their Future Voices program in the Empowering Voices category. This program has played a crucial role in amplifying the voices of those most affected by exploitation, offering migrant domestic workers a platform to speak out and advocate for their rights. Its nomination is a recognition of the profound change that collective action and storytelling can bring to communities affected by forced labor and abuse.

The evening was filled with poignant moments, none more so than the impassioned speech delivered by Jess Phillips MP. She called for urgent action and stronger protections against modern slavery and human trafficking, touching the hearts of everyone present. In a heartfelt gesture, Phillips also paid tribute to Marissa Begonia, a key advocate whose tireless work for the rights of domestic workers has driven significant legislative and social reform. The room erupted in applause, a testament to the profound impact Marissa has had on improving the lives of vulnerable workers.

A particularly impactful moment was the awarding of Best Broadcast Piece to Israel Simon’s Channel 4 News report, which exposed the harrowing realities faced by domestic workers trapped in modern-day slavery. The broadcast highlighted their courageous rescue and has since become one of the most-watched stories on Channel 4’s online platform, generating widespread attention and action. The report led to a Metropolitan Police investigation and prompted the Labour Party to review its policies to prevent forced labor. The inclusion of members from the Future Voices network in the report has only furthered the cause of addressing and eradicating modern slavery. Their bravery in sharing their stories has been instrumental in shifting the narrative around domestic worker exploitation.

The evening’s triumph continued as The Voice of Domestic Workers was recognized with an award for their contribution to the groundbreaking broadcast. This accolade signifies more than the acknowledgment of one story—it highlights the tireless work being done to rescue, protect, and support migrant domestic workers who face exploitation and abuse. It emphasizes the urgent need for systemic change and highlights the remarkable resilience of those who have survived unimaginable conditions.

The recognition at the Anti-Slavery Day Awards solidifies The Voice of Domestic Workers’ commitment to continue this essential work. The event serves as a powerful reminder that, although significant progress has been made, the fight is far from over. Together, the organization and its supporters are more determined than ever to advocate for the rights and dignity of domestic workers worldwide.

As awareness of the plight of migrant domestic workers continues to grow, The Voice of Domestic Workers remains at the forefront, ensuring that these workers' voices are heard and that justice is served.
