Last month, we achieved something truly historic. Together, The Voice of Domestic Workers and Waling Waling made history by forming the first-ever domestic workers branch within Unite the Union. This milestone is not just a victory for us but for domestic workers around the world.
For the first time in history, domestic workers have an official trade union branch—an acknowledgment of our struggles and the power of our collective action. Grace, a long-time member of the trade union working group, shared her thoughts on how this achievement can inspire women globally who face similar struggles.
The Power of Collective Action
"No human being should be treated as a slave. We deserve to be treated as human beings, and that includes us—domestic workers," Grace stated. The formation of this migrant domestic worker branch within Unite the Union is a powerful example of how marginalized workers can organize, demand their rights, and create meaningful change.
This branch demonstrates that even in precarious employment, workers can build power through solidarity. It sets a precedent for other domestic workers worldwide, proving that collective action can break barriers and achieve significant labor rights advancements.
The Challenges We Overcame
Domestic workers often work alone in private homes, making it incredibly difficult to come together as a movement. Employers frequently blacklist workers who join unions, fearing that an organized workforce will demand fair treatment and rights. Despite these challenges, we stood strong and made this historic breakthrough.
However, our fight is far from over. We must continue to push for the ratification of the International Labour Organization's Convention 189 (ILO C189). This convention establishes labor rights and protections for domestic workers globally, ensuring legal safeguards against exploitation.
A Beacon of Hope for Workers Worldwide
This achievement extends beyond domestic workers in the UK. Around the world, many workers face similar struggles—often isolated and vulnerable. The formation of this union sends a powerful message: You are not alone. Whether through unions or support networks, workers everywhere can unite, demand their rights, and challenge injustice.
As we celebrate this victory, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for labor rights. This is just the beginning of a global movement that will continue to fight for the dignity, respect, and legal recognition that all workers deserve.
