How Migrant Domestic Workers Are Fighting for a Better System 1/5

WATCH

The Strength and Leadership of Migrant Domestic Workers

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the women who lead change. But for migrant domestic workers, this is more than just a day—it’s a constant struggle for dignity, fairness, and rights. These workers are not merely surviving; they are actively fighting for a better system.

Jeanly, a migrant domestic worker, shares her perspective:

"As a migrant domestic worker, I know firsthand how strong and resilient we are. Despite the challenges we face, we come together, support each other, and fight for our rights. We share our stories, push back against unfair laws, and create safe spaces where we can be ourselves. In big or small ways, we show courage and strength. We are not just surviving—we are shaping a better world with our charity, dignity, and determination. Our resistance is a powerful reminder that real change often starts with us."

Fighting Back: No to Unfair Treatment

Domestic workers refuse to accept unfair treatment. They stand by each other, educate themselves about their rights, and speak up for change. Movements like Future Voices empower and amplify the voices of those who have been silenced for far too long.

Tomorrow, Gracie, alongside other members of Future Voices like Christina, will participate in the Women's Strike with the Nanny Solidarity Network. This is just one of many actions where domestic workers are fighting for new laws, challenging abusive employers, and demanding justice.

"We are a collective voice, strong and brave. We use our experiences to push for systemic change. We do not stand alone—we stand together."

How Domestic Workers Have Become Leaders in the Fight

The Voice of Domestic Workers has played a crucial role in transforming workers from unseen laborers to powerful advocates. Through education, training, and activism, domestic workers have risen as leaders in their communities:

Organizers and Advocates: They lead campaigns, negotiate policy changes, and fight for fair treatment and better working conditions.

Educators: They teach fellow workers about their rights, ensuring that everyone can stand up against exploitation.

Activists: They participate in protests, strikes, and legal battles to challenge injustice and push for legal reforms.

"By speaking up, we have turned our struggles into strength. Our voices are no longer hidden in the shadows—we are front and center, demanding the rights we deserve."

Education and Empowerment: The First Steps to Change

Empowering domestic workers starts with education. Without knowledge of their rights, how can they fight back? This is why organizations like The Voice of Domestic Workers focus on providing training and resources.

"We educate migrant domestic workers because knowledge is power. When workers are informed, they can protect themselves and demand fair treatment. Education is the foundation of our fight."

A Call to Action

To all members of our movement: Stand with us. Support migrant domestic workers. Fight for fair treatment, dignity, and justice. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will win.

Let’s make the future one where all domestic workers are recognized, protected, and empowered.
