Finding Confidence and Friendship through The Voice of Domestic Workers

by Marian

When I first arrived in the UK as a migrant domestic worker, I felt like I was stepping into an unfamiliar world—alone, unsure, and disconnected. I didn’t know anyone, and the isolation was overwhelming. I had left my family behind, and the work was demanding. I struggled with feeling invisible, as though my worth was measured only by the work I did, and not by who I was as a person. That changed when I joined The Voice of Domestic Workers.

From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt like I had found a safe space—where I was no longer just a domestic worker, but a woman with hopes, dreams, and potential. The Voice of Domestic Workers isn’t just a place for support—it’s a community. Through this group, I met others who were going through the same struggles, and that sense of connection made all the difference. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel alone.

One of the greatest gifts I received from The Voice of Domestic Workers was the opportunity to make new friends. The women I met here came from different countries, with different backgrounds, but we shared common experiences—being far from home, working hard to support our families, and trying to build a better life. It was in this community that I found not only new friends but also a sense of belonging. We supported each other, shared our stories, and learned from one another. These friendships have become some of the most meaningful relationships I’ve ever had, and they have been a source of strength and encouragement.

But it wasn’t just about friendship—it was about growth. The classes offered by The Voice of Domestic Workers were life-changing. I had always struggled with communication, whether it was because of language barriers or simply because I didn’t feel confident enough to speak up. Through the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, I began to improve my English skills. At first, it was difficult, but the supportive teachers and the small, welcoming class environment made it easier. I learned not just how to speak English but how to communicate with confidence.

Being able to communicate more effectively made a huge difference in my life. I could express myself more clearly at work, and I no longer felt so intimidated when talking to my employers or colleagues. I started to take part in conversations and share my thoughts and ideas. These small victories, as simple as they may seem, boosted my self-esteem in ways I never thought possible.

The classes didn’t just improve my language skills—they taught me how to listen, how to engage, and how to connect with others. I learned to speak up, not just in the workplace, but in my everyday life as well. I felt empowered to stand up for myself, to voice my opinions, and to set boundaries—things I had never been able to do before.

Through the confidence-building workshops offered by The Voice of Domestic Workers, I also learned more about my own worth. I began to understand that I am more than just a worker. I am a person who deserves respect, dignity, and equal treatment. These workshops helped me see myself through a new lens: not as someone who should be silent and invisible, but as someone with the power to shape my own life and future.

"When I first arrived in the UK, I felt invisible—alone, unsure, and disconnected. Joining The Voice of Domestic Workers changed everything. I found support, friendship, and the confidence to speak up, learn, and grow. I’m no longer just a worker—I’m someone with dreams and potential."

The group also offered opportunities to explore personal development through creative classes like drama and art. At first, I wasn’t sure how they would help me, but I quickly realized that they were not only fun but also therapeutic. These classes gave me a way to express myself creatively, and through the process, I was able to release pent-up emotions and feelings I had kept inside for so long. I found a new way to connect with myself and with others.

Through all of these experiences, I developed not just new skills, but also a renewed sense of self-worth. The voice that I had once kept silent began to grow louder. I became more confident in my interactions with others, and I started to believe that I deserved better opportunities and a better life. The Voice of Domestic Workers didn’t just teach me new things—it helped me discover my own strength and potential.

Today, I feel like a different person. I have more confidence in myself, I have made lifelong friends, and I no longer feel like I am just an invisible worker. I know that I matter. I am capable of more than I ever thought possible. I have the tools to communicate with confidence, to stand up for myself, and to advocate for the respect and dignity that every domestic worker deserves.

Joining The Voice of Domestic Workers was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Through their support, I’ve grown not just as a worker, but as a person. I am proud of who I am today, and I know that the journey of self-discovery and empowerment will continue. If you're feeling alone or uncertain, I encourage you to join this community. You are not alone, and with the right support, you can unlock your own potential too.
